Are You Ready for Some Football?

Posted in Puppy at 8:03 pm by Robin

Today is Rob’s birthday and I always like to get him little gag gifts. This year I got a football jersey for Lexie, but I got a San Francisco 49ers jersey and Rob is a die hard Raider fan. Lexie modeled it last night for the Niner-Dallas pre-season game.

We had family over for dinner last night. We had a wonderful fruit tort for dessert. Unfortunately, Lexie decided to try out counter surfing for the first time and got to enjoy some of the leftover tort that we hadn’t put away yet. That will teach us to leave food on the counters with a growing labrador in the house.

We Graduated!

Posted in Dog Training at 12:06 am by Robin

Lexie just graduated from another six week puppy school. She attended classes at Sirius Dog Training and we were very happy with the quality of training. Now we need to decide which classes to enroll her in next. I will probably enroll her in Puppy II @ Sirius, but I’m also entertaining the idea of classes at ARF or Mt. Diablo Dog Training Club. Decisions, decisions!

Here is a shot of Lexie and her classmates.

Lexie and her Puppy I Graduating Class

She’s the lab on the far right, I’m the one behind the camera. ;) Her best friend in class, Beau, is to her left. Emma is the labby on the left, she sits so pretty for a treat, but boy does she gobble your fingers. Gus, the golden retriever (second from the left) was the shy guy in class, but just adorable and Pepper, the tiny dog of the class, was so cute that everyone just wanted to take it home.

Lexie did awesome in her final night of class. We had a recall races and guess who one? If you guessed Lexie, you’re right! What made me really proud is that I didn’t have to lure her with a treat; I stood in place and told her to come. She also had a bit of a disadvantage during the first race; the handler didn’t release her when he was cued. My little lab, who hardly acknowledges me with distractions won all the recall races…Go figure. I do have to admit her recall is getting much better, when I call her name at the dog park she does look at me and usually she starts running towards me; her actually making it to me without being distracted is a crap shoot.

We also had team relay races; the dogs had to walk loose leash, perform sit/down/stand, walk loose leash again, and perform a heel finish. The females, which are the two labs, were pitted against all the other dogs. Guess who one that race? Yep, the labbies!

Lexie Playing in the Fountain

Posted in Puppy at 3:05 pm by Robin

This weekend we went to downtown Pleasant Hill to shop at City Dogs. I just love this store, they have great dog treats, collars, leashes and toys. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. The owner has a black lab, so she’s very knowledgeable about labbies and their needs.

While we were in Pleasant Hill we met up with two older labs, a mixed breed, and their owner. The mixed breed had come from Mexico. I guess in Mexico they euthanize female, stray dogs to cut back on the stray dog population. She said you can adopt any female dog you find on the street by going to a vet there, paying $20.00, and giving the dog some kind of pill. The dog was beautiful. Lexie tried to play bitey face with the two older labs, but they weren’t all that interested in her antics.

Lexie and the older labradors

The dog closest to Lexie weighs in at 120 pounds (down from 140…Yikes!). The other dog is around 100 pounds. Lexie is around 50 pounds.

Since they wouldn’t play with her, she decided to play bitey face with the water fountain. This is my first attempt with video on my camera. You can watch the YouTube video or you should see a link at the bottom of this post to play the movie of Lexie playing bitey face with the fountain.

Lexie @ 21 Weeks

Posted in Puppy at 4:55 am by Robin

Lexie is growing like crazy, she’s about 50 pounds now and she’s lost a majority of her puppy teeth. If you look at her mouth in the picture below, you should be able to see her little mouth is pretty empty.

Wait, can’t see? Try this one.

We’re very happy that those little, razor-sharp, puppy teeth are falling out. We’re giving her lots of chew toys, ice cubes, and frozen wash clothes.

She seems to be losing a lot of teeth at the doggie park. She’s still playing like a crazy puppy and she’s still as adorable as ever!
